France
Jean-Michel Frank was born in 1895 in Paris. He completed his elementary and secondary studies at the Lycee Janson de Sailly. In 1911, he began studies in law.

He lived through many tragedies in his early life, losing his two brothers in the First World War, which ultimately resulted in the suicide of his father the same year, 1915. Four years later, he inherited a small fortune when his mother died.

From 1919 to 1925, Jean-Michel traveled throughout the world, joining the artistic and social circles of that time, which resulted in his interest for interior design. The Paris apartment of the Vicomte Charles de Noailles was the work where his reputation and signature were born.

Frank redefined the decorative arts between 1932 and 1940. He had many influences from working in Paris, New York and South America. He tried to establish an original style for the thirties. Other aspects of Frank’s designs were inspired by Robert Mallet-Stevens; however, he put his own signature on products by the subtle use of rich materials that could only be attributed to him. Many of his club chairs and sofas have been copied repeatedly by those who appreciate his work.

Jean-Michel Frank’s style is still being used today to create modern pieces of furniture all around the world.
